Treats FAQ

What is your guarantee/return policy?

All West Paw treats are backed by our Love It Guarantee™, just like all of our other products. Please visit our guarantee page to fill out our form or learn more.

What does "air-dried" mean in relation to food?

Air-drying slowly and gently evaporates moisture from the raw ingredients, eliminating harmful pathogens while preserving vital nutrients, offering nutrition similar to a raw diet.

Where does West Paw source its Bison Meat from?

West Paw only uses 100% Pasture Raised Bison - humanely raised and sustainably sourced in the USA and Canada.

What is the nutritional difference between Beef and Bison?

Bison has a lower fat content and is richer in iron, B vitamins (vitamin B2 and niacin), and protein than beef. B vitamins help convert the nutrients from dog food into energy as well as supporting multiple metabolic functions and overall brain health.

What is the approximate size of the Bison hearts and Bison Lung treats? About how many pieces are in a 2.5 oz package?

We estimate ~20 pieces/strips per 2.5 oz bag. The treats are about 3-5 inches long. The heart pieces tends to be longer while the lung pieces are cut slightly smaller.

Are Bison a protected or endangered species?

Bison are not listed as a threatened or endangered species. As of January 2021, approximately 400,000 bison are raised as livestock.

What are the benefits of single or limited ingredient treats for dogs?

The benefits of a limited ingredient dog treat are that it provides pet parents the ability to control what exactly they are feeding their dog. A quality Limited Ingredient Diet (including treats) for dogs should be low in carbohydrates and high in quality proteins & fats.

What organ meat(s) do you use in your Duck and Pork Raw Freeze Dried treats?

We use the heart and liver in our Duck and Pork Superfood treats.

How long will your Freeze-Dried Treats last?

Our freeze-dried treats have a best-by date that is 18 months from the time they are packaged. Freeze-dried treats should be kept in a sealed container, like the ziplock they come in.

Are there preservatives in your freeze-dried treats?

The freeze-dried treats are preservative-free. In addition, we have sourced proteins that come from animals that are raised without growth hormones and antibiotics.
The Beef Liver and Beef Heart have just one ingredient. The Pork and Duck Superfoods have up to 6 ingredients, none of which are preservatives.

How long will your Creamy Treats last?

Our creamy treats have a best-by date that is 18 months from the time they are packaged. Therefore, Creamy treats should be used by the "best by" date.

Are there preservatives in your creamy treats?

Peanut butter and banana is preservative-free. Because the ingredients are all plant-based (peanuts and bananas) there are no antibiotics or hormones in the ingredients.

My peanut butter banana creamy treat is oily or has separated, is this normal?

Our Peanut Butter Banana treat uses freshly ground peanuts and like any natural peanut butter in your pantry, the oil can separate. Our recommendation is to knead the tube prior to opening.

I’ve noticed that my Beef Liver Creamy Treat is runny? Why and what should I do?

We recommend refrigerating our Beef Liver Creamy treat and kneading to mix and slightly warm up before use.

If my Beef Liver Creamy Treat liquifies, should I discard it?

No. All our treats meet our high standards of safety and all are laboratory tested to verify they are free from harmful bacteria and microbes. If your treat is runny or too liquid, refrigerating the treat will return it to its original, thicker consistency.

Is there any sugar in any of your treats?

There are zero added sugars in our treats.

Where can I find additional nutritional information?

Please see our Guarantee Analysis on the product pages as well as on the back of each package for a detailed ingredients list. This analysis measures protein, moisture, fat, fiber, and calculates calories in our treats.

Is your Peanut Butter and Banana Creamy Treat Vegan?

Yes. Our Banana Creamy Treat does not contain any animal byproducts.

Your treats are grain-free, what about DCM?

Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a serious issue in some dogs. According to the Journal of Animal Science, there is no link between grain-free foods to DCM. We recommend those dog owners who are concerned about DCM should work with their vets and trusted experts as well as feed their dogs a balanced diet and monitor and control their dogs' caloric intake (including the number of treats).

Is your sourcing from humane/sustainable farms? How do you know that?

We work with the American Grassfed Association (AGA) as well as with our processor and co-packer to make sure the proteins are sourced from farms and ranches that humanely and sustainably raise their livestock. The pork in our treats is raised humanely without hormones or antibiotics in Washington State at a farm that prioritizes earth-friendly practices.

Where are your treats manufactured?

  • Freeze dried treats are made in Oregon and packaged in Utah.
  • Creamy treats are made and packaged in Utah.
  • Bison treats are made and packaged in Colorado.

Do I need to refrigerate the creamy treats after opening the pouches(s)?

The Beef Liver & Pumpkin should be refrigerated and the Peanut Butter & Banana should be stored at room temperature.

Can you freeze your creamy treats?

We do not recommend freezing the creamy treats for storage.  If you are preparing a treat mix in a Toppl or other toy to freeze, all our treats can be frozen in a toy for a cool and refreshing treat.

Does freeze drying affect nutritional content of the food?

We believe that freeze drying does not affect the nutritional content of our foods. However, some proponents of raw foods for pets may argue that processing of any sort has the potential to change the nutritional content. We have chosen to freeze dry to be as close to raw as possible, with added safety for pets. There are no health risks to ingesting freeze dried foods.

Are the freeze dried treats safe for my puppy?

Our treats are safe and nutritious for puppies but we recommend smaller portions. These high reward treats can be great for training (don't forget the Treat Pouch). We recommend consulting your vet on any foods you give your dog.
