Bringing home a puppy is pure magic, tiny paws, wiggly tails and whole lot of joyful chaos. It’s exciting, heart melting, and yes...sometimes a little overwhelming. The good news is West Paw is here to help! With a little preparation, plenty of patience, and lots of joy and play, here are some tips and tools to help your new puppy settle in, learn the ropes, and grow into a confident, happy new best friend.
Here are a few puppy-starting tips and tricks for success.
The first few days in a new home are a big adventure for a little pup. Everything is new—smells, sounds, people, and places. Give your puppy time to explore at their own pace and keep things as calm as possible while they get their bearings.
Sleeping nearby for the first few nights can help ease the transition; introducing a crate slowly, with treats, meals, and cozy bedding helps pups see it as their own safe little space. A little comfort goes a long way toward building confidence.
Puppies learn fast, especially when routines are consistent. Puppies are part explorer, part nap champion. Balance activity with plenty of rest so they can grow, recharge and process all the exciting new experiences.
Frequent potty breaks, including after meals, eating, and playing, help them understand where to go. PRO TIP— set an alarm every 2-3 hours during the first two weeks as a human reminder to set up success for potty training—alarm = time to go!
Short walks and outdoor adventure help to introduce new sights, sounds, and textures that build confidence.
And be sure to balance activity with plenty of rest!
FUN FACT: Puppies may sleep up to 18-20 hrs day. All that joy and play is hard work!
Between 8–12 weeks, puppies are learning machines. This is a perfect time to introduce them to friendly people, new environments, and everyday experiences.
Positive early exposure helps puppies grow into calm, adaptable dogs who are comfortable in the world around them.
Keep play sessions short, fun and frequent—SFF! While training and routine matter, PLAY is where the magic happens!
Play helps puppies:
Always supervise their play and choose toys that are big enough to keep curious puppy teeth away from human fingers and tough enough to handle sharp puppy teeth. If a plush or hard toy becomes damaged, cycle in a new toy to prevent choking or digestive issues. But remember, chewing is not bad—it’s a natural puppy behavior. Providing safe chew toys like the West Paw HURLEY, BOUNDR, and TUX, and tougher plush toys like the West Paw ROWDIES helps those chewing instincts move toward toys instead of shoes, table legs, and cords.
A happy puppy needs a toy box that works as hard as they do. Offer a variety of toys and enrichment.
West Paw toys check all the boxes to build a safe and durable toy box—plus they float, are dishwasher safe, FDA compliant and freezer safe, non-toxic, and flex!
For safety, all toys and treats for puppies need to be introduced with a watchful eye.
Every moment is a learning moment for a puppy.
With patience, gentle structure and plenty of safe and joyful play, you’ll help your puppy build confidence, learn important skill and create a bond that only grows stronger with time.
Enjoy the journey— expect lots of tail wags, goofy moments and unforgettable puppy adventures—and don’t forget to take lots of photos!
