10 Years as a B Corp!

What is a B Corp?

B Corp Certification is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials. In order to achieve certification, a company must:

Demonstrate high social and environmental performance by achieving a B Impact Assessment score of 80 or above and passing our risk review. Multinational corporations must also meet baseline requirement standards.

Make a legal commitment by changing their corporate governance structure to be accountable to all stakeholders, not just shareholders, and achieve benefit corporation status if available in their jurisdiction.

Exhibit transparency by allowing information about their performance measured against B Lab’s standards to be publicly available on their B Corp profile on B Lab’s website.

2022 was another amazing year for West Paw. As we entered our 26th year of designing and manufacturing eco-friendly dog products, we continued to be reminded of the joy that comes from connections — with our dogs and with people. Whether it’s spending time with our family, our fellow team members, our customers, or friends across the communities we work, live, and play in, we believe in leveraging business, particularly our business, to ignite joyful human connections. It also brings us great fulfillment to know that our products can help create such joyful connections between dogs and their humans.

As a Certified B Corp and a registered Montana Benefit Corporation, we are also proud to continue our commitment to using our business as a force for good. While some of the challenges of the prior two years continued into 2022, we continued to see opportunity to do things better, for our people and through our products.

We continued to innovate ways to meet the needs of our people while also meeting the needs of the business. By first asking our employees what they wanted and valued, we improved our compensation and benefits in a competitive, sustainable manner. Additional changes were elimination of overnight shifts, implemention of a 4 ½ day workweek, creation of a paid day off for Wellness, and the addition of on-site ergonomic and physical therapy consultations for all employees. We hired for and promoted from within for multiple key leadership positions across the organization to help drive sustainable, efficient business operating practices and establish consistency in our actions to build upon our already strong culture and work environment.

Speaking of culture, we continue to set the tone for our culture through our Core Values: create joyful connection, grow for good, humanize business, be real, and solve for tomorrow. However, we recognize that words alone don’t create our culture; putting them into action through our behaviors ultimately becomes our culture – dynamic and ever changing. We have always had a unique culture that is purpose-driven and lived by leaders who provide clarity of direction, and affirmation of what is acceptable and what is not. We also recognize that guiding, developing, and nurturing our culture takes intention and effort from all employees.

Our products continue to lead the industry in creativity, durability, and sustainability. We launched the XL Toppl, an even bigger take on one of our most popular products, that allows you to serve up food and treats in a mentally stimulating, slow feeding manner. We continue to be proud of our first of its kind Seaflex collection, made in part with ocean-bound plastics, helping prevent plastic bottles and other plastic consumables from entering the ocean. We continued to grow our Join the Loop program with consumers and our retail partners, in which we take our returned products and fully recycle them to make a brand-new product. Our Bison treats are sustainably sourced and use organ meats of the animal that aren’t readily consumed by humans and are often wasted. We have them safely processed to make high protein treats that dogs love. And finally, West Paw’s Love-It Guarantee ensures that you will have a joyful experience with your dog and our products every time, every day.

As we continue to innovate new products and solutions that we hope will be your dog’s next favorite toy or treat, we do so in a way that constantly seeks to balance our effort to earn a profit with genuine concern and care for dogs, our people, and the planet.
