About Black Russian Terriers
Approved in 1997 by the RKF standards commission, the RKF presidium, and THE CATTLE AND BREEDING BUREAU of the MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS of the RUSSIAN FEDERATION.

The Black Russian Terrier is a dog of above average and large size, strong, enduring, courageous, self-confident, of square or slightly stretched format, easily adaptable to different climatic conditions, well trainable. Many years of using the Black Terrier as a guard dog prove his high efficiency and reliability. Balanced temperament and good trainability allow to use him not only as a guard dog but also in other kinds of work. BRT has massive bone structure, proportionate build, sound/rough and sound type of constitution, well developed musculature. Type of temperament is stable-agile with defensive reaction in active form. Secondary sex characteristics must be well pronounced. Height of males is 68-74cm (27-29in.), for females - 66-72cm (26-28in.). Lower height limit for males is 66cm (26in.), females - 64cm (25in.). The upper limit can be exceeded for 3cm (1.25in.). Deviation from the desirable height (the upper limit) for more than 3cm significantly decreases the breeding value of the dog. The whole body of the BRT is civered with thick, rough coat. Decorative hair is well developed (on the head and limbs). Trimming is obligatory in accordance with the approved style. The BRT was developed in Red Star kennel by reproductive crossing of proven and well compatible working breeds: Giant Schnauzer, Airedale Terrier, Rottweiler, Newfoundland.

Head- proportionate to the overall built, long (equals or slightly exceeds 40% of dog's height at the withers), with moderately wide skull, rounded but not too pronounced cheek-bones, eyebrows are fairly defined. The forehead is flat, stop is clearly defined, but not steep, top lines of the skull and muzzle are parallel. Muzzle is massive, slightly tapered to the nose. The muzzle is slightly shorter than half of the length of the head. Mustaches and beard give the muzzle a blunt rectangular shape, lips are thick, fleshy, black, tight and without flews. Nose is large and black. The gums have dark pigmentation. Ears - set high, hanging on the cartilage, rather small, triangular in shape, with front edge lying close to the cheeks. The ears are firm without wrinkles and dents. Eyes are small, oval shaped, set straight and wide, dark. Eyelids are dry, dark, tight.

Neck- massive, dry, strong, of medium length (approximately equals to the length of the head). Set at 40 - 45 degree angle to the line of the back.

Body- The chest is deep, long, in cross section has oval shape, wide, with slightly prominent ribs. Forechest is slightly protruding in relation to the point of shoulder. The brisket is deep, reaching down to the elbows or little below. Depth of the chest is about 46 - 47% of the dog's height. The belly is moderately drawn up. Withers are high, long, well developed and clearly defined. Height at the withers is 1 - 2cm (0.5-1in.) exceeds the height at the croup. Back is strong, straight, wide, muscular. Length of the back is approximately 1/2 of the distance from point of withers to the base of the tail. Loin section is wide, short (about 1/2 of the length of the back), muscular, slightly arched. The croup is wide, muscular, moderately long, slightly sloping toward the highly set tail.

Tail- thick, set high, docked short (3-5 vertebrae left).

Forelegs- straight and parallel when viewed from the front. Shoulder blades are long, sloping at 45 degrees angle. Angle between the shoulder blade and upper arm is about 100 degrees. Shoulders are strongly muscled. Apper arms are straight, thick, of medium length, vertical and parallel to each other. Elbows are pointed back. Pasterns are short, massive almost vertical. Length of the front leg from the elbow to the ground is about 53 - 54% of dog's height.

Hindquarters- from rear view legs are straight, parallel, set little wider than the forelegs. Upper thighs are long, sloping at about 120 degree angle. Thighs are long, slanting, rear pasterns are vertical, massive, of moderate length. Angulation of stifles and hocks is pronounced (angle of 120 degrees approximately). Hocks are dry, clearly defined. Pasterns are massive, long, set vertically.

Feet- large, compact, round. Nails are dark. Dewclaws should be removed.

Coat- harsh, wiry, dense. Coat with fold 4 - 10cm (2-4in.) long, covers the whole body. Decorative hair is well developed. On the muzzle it forms eyebrows, mustaches and beard, on the withers and neck - "mane". Front legs and hindquarters are well protected by long harsh coat. Undercoat is dense, soft, well developed. Mandatory trimming according to approved style.

Color- is black or black with insignificant amount of gray hair.

Movement- typical gaits are non-trail trot and gallop. Legs must move straight. As speed increases, the legs will slightly converge under body toward a center line. Movement of back and loin is elastic. Joints are bending and unbending freely, with good reach in the forequarters and good driving power in the hindquarters.

Major Faults- Deviation toward light or raw built, stretched format, stocky or leggy dog. Sluggishness, excessive excitability. Short, coarse, heavy or light head, "cheekiness", rounded forehead. Short, snub, snipey, narrow, pointed muzzle. Raw lips, small nose. Wrinkled, semi-erect, held apart from the cheeks ears. Round, light colored, aslant set, or close set eyes. Visible third eyelid. Walleye. Lips and gums without pigmentation. Small, widely-spaced, badly damaged teeth. Short, highly set neck, dewlap. Flat, barrel-shaped, shallow, narrow chest. Weak, narrow, arched back. Flat, narrow, concave, very arched loin. Horizontal, sloping, narrow croup. Hooked tail. Straight shoulders, narrow set legs, short apper thighs and lower thighs, raw joints. Straight stifles. Excessive or insufficient angulation of hindquarters. Flat or spread toes, light colored nails, rear dewclaws. Too much grayish hair (exceed one-third of the entire coat). Smooth or flat coat on the body even in combination with decorative hair on the head and legs. Tied-up, heavy movement, swinging of croup from side to side and vertical movement of croup, crabbing, amble.

Disqualifying faults- unproportional appearance. Deviation from the type of constitution. Cowardice, extreme excitability, unmanageable aggression. Monorchidism, cryptorchidism, undeveloped testicles. Nose pigmentation of other colour than black. All deviations from scissors bite. Absence of any tooth, incisors positioned not in one line at the base. Undocked tail. Soft, short, silky coat or curly coat. Absence of decorative hair on the legs and foreface. White markings. Clearly defined areas of profound grey hair. Any color than black.

Commentary
Many people believe, that the name of breed - Black Russian Terrieritself indicates, how the dog has to look. For a long time the breed was considered a terrier and was belong to third group FCI (terriers), however, we have to remember, that BRT was created as a guarddog, and it's main ancestor was Giant Schnauzer. It follows that BRT - nota terrier and shell not looks like one. Therefore, in 1994 the breed has been transferred from third group into second group FCI (molossian dogs, schnauzers, pinchers). Preferable type of BRT is sound-rough, not sound-dry. However, excessive massiveness and roughhess often lead to coarse heads, short necks, short bones and straight stifles. Sometimes these dogs are listless, phlegmatical. On the contrary, dogs of sound-dry type usually have narrow heads, too long, thin highly set necks, flat ribs, upright shoulders and similar to the terrier type. As a rule they are nervouse and overactive.

Size and Sex type.
Today cinologists decided not to penalize well-balanced oversized dogs, as long as they keep the breed type and proper movement. But generally bigger dogs have more deviations from desirable type. In most cases they are leggy, have flat ribs, straight shoulders, dry light heads and overly refined racy build. But large well-balanced animals of good proportions and proper breed type can be used for breeding. Therefore we can see very different animals at conformation rings. In the future, the breed will become more stable on size. Definitely females must differentiate from males considerabely. The female must exhibit greater refinement by means of a smoother muscular development and more delicately formed head. In other words, the female, though not to be considered as lacking in strength, must has the quality best described as femininity. The female, on account of her maternal duties, should be allowed a slightly longer back than the male. The males must appear more massive throughout than the bitch, with larger frame and heavier bone and convey an impression of great masculinity. Unfortunately we often see, that large massive females closer to the breed standard. Small, weak, bitchy dogs must be disqualified.

General appearance
BRT is a proportional powerfully build working dog. Coarseness or dry overly elegant terrier-like appearence are equally undesirable. The ideal dog is stamped with a look of quality and nobility - difficalt to define, but unmistakable when present. BRT has two-ply or double coat, the outer coat is harsh and wiry in texture, the undercoat is soft and should never overpower the wiry outer coat. For that purpose the BRT must be trimmed and cliped for show ring to emphasize the Breed standard requirements. Sharp contrasts and overtrimming must be avoided. After the trimming BRT must convey the distinct impression of noble elegance and unsurpassed beauty combined with strong, powerful, proportional figure.
